Eclipse Cloud Veil | 04.08.2024
Saratoga, New York

This is one of the last images from my sequence of around 4,500 shots of April 8th's eclipse. In the Capital District, we caught around 97% coverage before the clouds drifted in. This shot captures a delicate veil of high clouds, glowing in the crescent sun's light. Photography has this amazing ability to distort time, offering unexpected perspectives.

The Architectural Details of the former Delaware and Hudson Building, #AlbanyNY

After reading "The 99% Invisible City: A Field Guide to the Hidden World of Everyday Design" by Roman Mars, I've come to regard the built environment as a narrative waiting to be explored. Cities become fascinating when one delves into the details that unveil their stories. The layers of history are there, awaiting decipherment; all it takes is a deliberate stroll to uncover them.

This image series captures the intricate and fascinating details adorning the exterior and roofline of the former Delaware and Hudson Building, now recognized as the H. Carl McCall SUNY Building. The Delaware and Hudson (D&H) Building initially served as the headquarters for the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company. Over time, it morphed into a defining feature of Albany's skyline, erected in 1914 by architect Marcus T. Reynolds in the grand Beaux-Arts style.

Beaux-Arts architecture, prevalent in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, is distinguished by its grandiosity and classical influences. Buildings in this style often feature monumental scale, exhibiting imposing facades adorned with classical elements such as columns, pediments, and domes. Symmetry and balance are central tenets of Beaux-Arts design, with structures organized around a central axis and meticulously arranged facades. Elaborate ornamentation, including sculptural details and decorative moldings, enhances the visual appeal of these buildings, reinforcing their classical roots. Additionally, Beaux-Arts architects frequently incorporate the classical orders—Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian—into their designs, further evoking the grandeur of ancient architecture. The style emphasizes a clear hierarchy of spaces, with public areas and ceremonial spaces receiving greater attention and embellishment than private or utilitarian spaces. Sculpture and painting are often integrated into Beaux-Arts buildings, serving both decorative and symbolic purposes, enriching the overall aesthetic.

The next time you find yourself in Downtown Albany (or any city), take a moment to look up. Amidst the architectural details, you'll discover stories woven into the very fabric of the buildings — direct links to the past and the skilled craftsmen and artisans who brought them to life.

St. Joseph’s Church | Albany, New York

St. Joseph’s Church | Albany, New York

St. Joseph's in Arbor Hill, originally constructed in the late 19th century, underwent significant modifications over the years. The main spire was added in 1910, approximately two decades after its initial construction in 1879.

Designed by architect Patrick Keely, renowned for his work on the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, St. Joseph's Church stands as a prominent example of neo-gothic architecture in Albany, New York's Arbor Hill neighborhood. Its architectural significance is underscored by its designation as a city landmark and its integral role in the Albany skyline.

However, despite its historical and architectural significance, St. Joseph's Church ceased operations in 1994. Subsequently, the City of Albany initiated the process of selling the property, listing it for sale in February 2023.

Salem 7 | Albany, New York

Salem 7 Sculpture, Empire State Plaza | Albany, New York

Golden hour over the Plaza: Named after Antoni Milkowski’s studio in Salem, New York, Salem 7 consists of seven, four-foot cubes arranged into the form of a cross. While it is not one of the sixteen works of art commissioned for the Plaza, Milkowski’s work creates a juxtaposing dialogue with its surroundings as if it were purposely placed in its location. The dark, sharp, and square shapes of Salem 7 directly contrast with the light gray, curvilinear roof of the Empire State Plaza Performing Arts Center (more commonly known as The Egg) in which the sculpture is positioned under.

Restoring War Images in Jounralist's Memory | Times Union | 05.20.2024

Sincere thanks to Paul Grondahl, Director of the New York State Writer’s Institute, for featuring my Faces of Vietnam restoration project in today’s Times Union, which showcases the work of Bernie Kolenberg from Troy, New York, the first American correspondent killed in Vietnam.

Our conversation at Albany’s Fort Orange Club, steeped in Albany history, was truly enriching. It’s an honor to be mentioned in the same article with Pulitzer Prize-winning author William Kennedy, iconic war correspondent Peter Arnett, and Horst Fass, a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner. The ultimate goal of this project was to ensure that Bernie’s story and his remarkable images are not forgotten. I’m pleased to see the images back in the public eye.

And, of course, special thanks to Joanne Ziter, Bernie’s niece, for entrusting me with such an important project. I am happy to see Bernie back on page one where he belongs.

Time Stack | Angel at the Sepulchre

Time Stack | Angel at the Sepulchre

This image depicts a technique known as time stacking where approximately 400 sunset photos are layered additively, resulting in dreamy trails of color across the sky. Each layer adds only light to the sky, drawing lines for movement and blending colors like brush strokes.

It's my favorite time-lapse method for infusing dramatic movement into a static photo.

The sculpture showcased is "Angel at the Sepulchre," situated atop the grave of Emma Rathbone Turner on the south ridge of Albany Rural Cemetery. A sepulchre (or sepulcher) is a small room or monument, cut in rock or built of stone, where a person is laid to rest.

Crafted by the skilled hands of Erastus Dow Palmer, this piece holds an enigmatic aura, featuring a seated, winged male figure in a heroic pose, palms resting on robed knees. Inscribed at its base are the words: "Why Seek Ye The Living Among The Dead." Renowned sculptor Palmer, who transitioned from cameo-cutting to large-scale sculpture upon relocating to Albany in 1849, is widely celebrated for his neoclassical style.

Palmer's ascent to prominence was further propelled by his exhibition of twelve sculptures, known as "the Palmer Marbles," at the National Academy of Design in 1856. Among his notable works are "The White Captive" (1858) housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, "Peace in Bondage" (1863), and the aforementioned "Angel at the Sepulchre" (1865) in Albany, New York. Additionally, his bronze statue of Chancellor Robert R. Livingston (1874) graces Statuary Hall in the Capitol, Washington, D.C., alongside numerous portrait busts.

Erastus Dow Palmer passed away at his residence in Albany on March 9, 1904, and rests in Albany Rural Cemetery a short distance from his masterwork.
